Connectivity Issue - Dallas and Atlanta Data Centers
Incident Report for Linode
Postmortem

On April 2, 2024, at approximately 04:00 UTC, external third-party maintenance commenced on the backbone networking links between our Atlanta and Dallas regions. By 04:43 UTC, connectivity errors affecting traffic to both Dallas and Atlanta data centers had surfaced. Following an initial investigation around 13:00 UTC, it was concluded that these connection errors stemmed from the ongoing third-party maintenance.

At 13:49 UTC, Akamai administrators successfully mitigated the connectivity issues by rerouting traffic away from the affected links between Atlanta and Dallas. The external maintenance concluded at 17:24 UTC, initiating a series of connectivity tests between the two regions, culminating successfully by 19:14 UTC.

A brief monitoring period ensued to assess the readiness for traffic restoration. By 22:09 UTC, this monitoring phase concluded, and traffic was gradually reinstated, with ongoing surveillance in place. Brief connectivity interruptions were noted around 01:42 UTC on April 3, 2024, prompting continued monitoring to uphold reliability.

On April 3, 2024, at 20:55 UTC, the monitoring efforts concluded without further observed connectivity issues, signaling the resolution of the incident.

Monitoring
We have identified an issue with a third party service provider that affected the connectivity in our Atlanta and Dallas data centers. The issue was noticed intermittently from 04:43 UTC to 13:42 UTC on April 2, 2024. During this time, users might have experienced intermittent connection timeouts and errors for all services deployed in those data centers. This issue also impacted use of the Linode API and our Cloud Manager, causing performance degradation and intermittently returning 502 errors on API requests.
We are closely monitoring our systems and based on our observations, the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.
If you are still experiencing issues, please open a Support ticket for assistance.
