Incident Report for Linode

Postmortem

On August 15, 2025, from 19:02-19:07 UTC and from 19:20-20:04 UTC, the end-user’s traffic traversing the Madrid Datacenter (FABRIC-MAD2) experienced intermittent connection timeouts and availability issues (5xx errors). The traffic loss occurred due to one of the border routers blackholing traffic as a result of a defect in the legacy firmware. This defect was triggered when multiple interfaces on the router flapped simultaneously, causing the router to incorrectly forward traffic into a blackhole.

At 20:04 UTC on August 15, 2025, Akamai took the affected border router out of production , at which point the impact was fully mitigated.

Akamai upgraded the router to a newer firmware version where this defect is fixed. In addition, we validated that no other routers in the Compute network are running the same legacy code to prevent a recurrence.

This summary provides an overview of our current understanding of the incident given the information available. Our investigation is ongoing and any information herein is subject to change.

Identified

Between approximately 19:02 – 19:07 UTC, and then again between 19:20 – 20:04 UTC, we observed a period of connectivity issues in MAD2. The issue subsided after we took a border router out of service. No further network issues have been observed since the loss subsided around 20:04 UTC. We identified the issue and a fix is being implemented.
