On September 5, 2024, between 21:01 UTC and 21:19 UTC, a global connectivity issue resulted in widespread disruptions and service failures. The issue stemmed from a network configuration change on an Akamai backbone router in Melbourne. This resulted in the announcement of more prefixes than anticipated and congestion in one of Akamai’s upstream provider networks, disrupting traffic and causing errors across multiple Akamai services.
Upon identifying the root cause, we immediately rolled back the configuration change, restoring normal traffic flow and mitigating the impact by 21:19 UTC. Post-incident monitoring confirmed that all systems were stable and operational following the rollback.
